Lenherr throws a 3-hit MIAA shutout

Golden Giant Jake Lenherr pitched a complete 7-inning game for Washburn today, allowing no runs on 3 hits and 3 walks. Jake also recorded 11 strikeouts. Although Washburn won 8-o, Golden Giant Randy Wild's home run in the bottom of the 2nd would of been all they needed to win. Other Golden Giant notes from game 1 include Jerad Head going 1 for 4 with a run scored and another batted in and Brian Martinek going 2 for 3, also with a run scored and a RBI.

Game 2 did not go as well, Washburn lost 2 to 1. Golden Giant numbers were Head 0 for 4, Martinek 0 for 2 with a walk, and Randy Wild was 2 for 3.

Jayhawk web updates

Both the Hays Larks and the Wichita Twins have updated their websites for 2005.

More evidence of the Elkhart Dusters demise here, the Dusters are absent from the Larks and Twins schedules, just as they were from the El Dorado Broncos. The "League Info" link on the Twins site also mentions just 6 Jayhawk teams.

Roster Subtractions: Nick Enlow and Jordan Garner

LHP Nick Enlow and RHP Jordan Garner are no longer on the 2005 Golden Giants Roster.

Jordan Garner was mentioned as a player for the Southwest Slashers in a recent Joplin Globe article.

Jayhawk League Update

Articles on the NBC website and in the Joplin Globe confirm the Slashers move from Springfield to Joplin's Joe Becker Stadium. The team will play in the Jayhawk League and be called the Southwest Slashers.

The March 9th Globe article mentions that the Slashers "... will compete against Kansas entrants El Dorado, Wichita, Liberal and Hays, plus the Nevada (Mo.) Griffons." The Elkhart Dusters are noticibly absent from that list. The El Dorado Broncos have also posted a schedule that does not include the Dusters. It appears that the Dusters are no longer a part of the Jayhawk League.

A good day for Lindy Wray

Golden Giant Lindy Wray went 2 for 2 with two walks for Hutchinson against Dodge City on Wednesday. One of his two hits was a triple that netted him 3 RBIs.

Hutch Head Coach Kyle Crookes said:

Lindy Wray getting that hit was nice to open things up. Throughout the rest of the game I was really happy because we put up runs in almost every inning and that's what I like to see. It was good to see Lindy swing the bat well.

Still involved in the Game

Former Topeka Capitals GM Don Carlile is staying involved in the Jayhawk League, and is currently recruiting players for the Liberal BeeJays. He was recently interviewed by the Southwest Daily Times about the makeup of the 2005 Beejays Roster.

Jordan Garner pitches in Cowley shutout victory

Jordan Garner was one of seven pitchers used by Cowley County in a 4 hit shutout victory over Connors State on Tuesday. Both teams restricted themselves to using only wood bats in this game.

The Cowley Tigers are currently 6-0, and 4 of those victories were against ranked opponents.

Catching up with the Cavaliers

I'm starting to realize how difficult it will be to follow individual performances of junior college players relying primarily on the internet. Most Jayhawk Conference teams don't post stats or box scores on team web sites, and the local newspapers that cover the teams usually publish weekly, not daily.

So today I ventured into an unfamiliar part of the JCCC website and was happy to discover some baseball press releases.

From the 2/25 doubleheader sweep of Rockhurst JV:

...Sophomore Dan Heflin, one of the team’s top hitters last season, walked. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Sophomore Tommy Mangino drove in Burgess with a fielder’s choice, and Heflin advanced to third, and later scored...

....Freshman right-hander Peter Davenport was solid in his collegiate debut, working four innings without allowing a hit. He only struggled slightly in his fourth inning. Davenport walked the first two batters, then hit the third to load the bases. Rockhurst got on the board with a sacrifice fly to left field, but that was all they could manage. Davenport got another fly out and and a ground out to second base to end the inning...

...[Truman] Marek went 2-for-2 with two steals and an run batted in.

The road trip to Texas didn't go as planned, the Cavaliers did travel to Midland, Texas; only to have all six scheduled games rained out. Resulting in this great quote from JCCC head coach Kent Shelley in yesterday's press release.
"Well, it was a bonding experience I guess," Shelley said. "One of our Iowa players got see his first cactus, so I guess that was a highlight."

Ichabods fall to Rockhurst

Washburn lost a non-conference game to Rockhurst University today, 14 runs to 3. Golden Giants Randy Wild and Brian Martinek were both 0 for 3 at the plate, but both managed to score a run anyway. Brian reached first via a fielder's choice and Randy got there via the base on balls.

Junior College Roundup

Over the weekend, Cloud County played a Saturday doubleheader at Northern Oklahoma College--Tonkawa and a Sunday doubleheader at Northern Oklahoma College--Enid. They won both against Tonkawa and lost both against Enid. No box scores are availiable, but an article in the Concordia Blade-Empire mentions a win on the mound and a home run at the plate for Golden Giant Raub Kirkwood and Golden Giant Ryne Fraser picking up his 3rd save.

Last Monday, Golden Giant Jordan Garner pitched two scoreless innings for Cowley County against #20 Maple Woods. He also saw action against Barton County on Saturday.

Golden Giant Jon Hansen has 5 strikeouts over 7 innings for Hutchinson in a victory over Arkansas-Ft. Smith on Saturday.
