NBC Central Regional Bracket

The 2007 NBC Central Regional Bracket is now online.

Regular season ends

Turns out that the Beatrice game originally scheduled for Friday had been rescheduled as part of a previous doubleheader. So that means the Golden Giants 2007 regualr season has come to an end. The Giants' final regular season record is 13-20 overall and 11-19 in the MINK, after a 3-1 loss at FCA last night.

Since the Giants did not secure the MINK league pennant (The Beatrice Bruins are the 2007 MINK League champions.), their only availiable route to the National Baseball Congress World Series would be to secure a bid at the NBC Central Regional. Their first postseason game will be at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday the 22nd in Clarinda.

Giants on final regular season road trip

As noted in the comments below, the Giants are 3-0 so far on the final road trip of the regular season, winning all three games against the Generals in Ozark. This brings the Giants record to 13-19 overall, and 11-18 within the MINK league.

The road trip continues with a game agaist the FCA Grays tonight in Kearney, MO (7:00 p.m. start). The final game of the regular season will be in Beatrice on Friday night.

The NBC Central Regional is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 23rd.

Update: Updated to correct the Beatrice info, per comments below.

Giants at Chillicothe tonight?

The Golden Giants schedule had a game scheduled in Chillicothe tonight, but I'm guessing it's been rescheduled to July 10th, since Chillicothe's website does not have a game on their schedule tonight, but does have a Golden Giants at Mudcats matchup on July 10th which is not on the Giants schedule.

As noted in comments below, the Giants lost in Blue Springs and won in Beatrice, so the record now stands at 8-6 overall and 6-6 in the MINK.

The Golden Giants will face the Clarinda A's at Seaman High School at 7 p.m. tomorrow night.

I missed the game tonight, but local TV is reporting that the Giants defeated the Beatrice Bruins, 4 runs to 2.

Giants lose to A's, 3-1

The Topeka Golden Giants suffered a frustrating loss to the Clarinda A's tonight, despite excellent pitching performances by A.J. Morris, Max Ellenbecker and Dustin Holthaus. By my unofficial count, only one of the A's three runs was earned. In addition to the 3 Topeka errors, there were numerous close plays which didn't go Topeka's way. This one was lost by inches.

Topeka hits were by Hosey (2), Scott, Monahan, Griffen and Handran. The lone Giants RBI was by Griffen in the 8th. A.J Morris threw another gem, giving up no earned runs in 6 innings of work.

The Giants travel to Chillicothe tomorrow, and return home to face the Bruins on Sunday night. They are now 5-5 overall and 3-5 in the MINK League.

Giants defeat Grays, 13-2

The Topeka Golden Giants lit up the scoreboard at Hummer Sports Park tonight, scoring 13 runs on 16 hits against the FCA Grays. (The Grays scored 2 runs on 8 hits.)

The Giants' offensive highlights were numerous, too numerous to mention each one. So for a change of pace, I'll focus on defense tonight. Starter Travis Blankenship pitched five shutout innnings, scattering 5 FCA hits. Dustin Stoval took over in the top of the 6th and also pitched very effectively, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits in the last 4 innings.

Both pitchers benefited from the Giants defense, which really seemed to come together tonight. There were two very nice 6-3 plays. In the 2nd, FCA batter Ryan Sinclair hit a ground ball right up the middle, which looked like a sure base hit to cenerfield. Giants shortstop Ty Legan managed to snag it, deep behind second base, and made a long throw to Chad Griffen at first, just in time to make the putout. Later, in the 7th, Joe Hosey, who had moved to short as part of some Golden Giant substitutions, was involved in a similar 6-3 play. Hosey hustled over behind second to get to a well struck ground ball and quickly threw to first. His momentum carried the throw a bit offline, but Griffen was able to stretch out towards right field to make the play.

It was announced at the game tonight that the Giants will travel to Beatrice tomorrow, for a road game that was not listed on the original schedule. The next home game is Friday night when the Clarinda A's come to Topeka.

The Topeka Golden Giants are now 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the MINK.

Update: Brett Scott hit a home run in the bottom of the 4th, a previous version of this post incorrectly attributed it to Ty Legan.

Generals over Giants, 10-7

A late rally by the Giants fell short this afternoon, and the Ozark Generals defeated the Topeka Golden Giants, with 10 runs to Giants' 7. As in the second game last night, the Generals struck early, scoring 3 runs each in the 2nd, 4th and 6th innings.

Down nine runs the Giants' bats began to stir in the bottom half of the 6th, when hits by Sam Merrill and Brett Scott set up a 2-RBI base hit by a Joe Hosey.

The Giants struck back again in the 8th when Generals pitcher Zak Kinnison struggled with his control. Joe Hosey came to the plate, with the bases having been loaded by repeated walks. Hosey knocked in two more runs with a double down the right field line. The third Giants' run scored when Kennison then walked Chris Dobler and then hit Kevin Wempe with a pitch, forcing a run home. After a pitching change, the Giants' fourth and final run of the inning scored when an Austin Kirkwood chopper to short resulted in a throwing error.

The Giants and Generals both scored a single run in the 9th inning. The Giants' run scored when Ty Legan scored from third on an error. Legan had reached base via a walk, stolen 2nd and moved to third on base hit by Chad Griffen.

The Golden Giants are now 4-4 overall, 2-4 in the MINK.

Giants split with Generals

The Topeka Golden Giants split tonight's MINK League doubleheader with the Ozark Generals. The Giants shutout the Generals in game one, winning 5-0, but they lost the nightcap by the score of 6 to 2.

In game one, most of the Giants' offense came in the 3rd inning. A base hit to centerfield by Joe Hosey scored Tyler Knight. Followed by Legan and Hosey scoring on a triple by Chad Griffen. Griffen later came in on a 2-out base hit by Abe Steinbach. The Giants' fifth run was batted in by Sam Merrill in the bottom of the 6th, bringing in Jerad White with a base hit to centerfield. Wally Marciel pitched six solid innings, shuting out the Generals and allowing only 5 hits.

In game two, the Generals scored three runs in the top of the first. Drew Kellums batted in the first two General runs with a bases-loaded single to right field. Later General Bo Whitaker brought the third Generals run home during a play that was within inches of being an inning-ending double play. The Giants narrowed the gap in the third inning when an RBI single by Brett Scott and a Joe Hosey sac fly batted in Austin Kirkwood and Legan respectively. Unfortunately, the Generals pulled away in the 5th with the damage being done by a 2-RBI bases-loaded hit to centerfield by Mike Rector. The final Generals' run later scored off Bo Whitaker's bat on a fielder's choice.

The rubber game of the Generals series will start tomorrow at 2 p.m. The Giants are now 4-3 overall, 2-3 in the MINK.

Saturday Preview

The Ozark Generals will be at Hummer for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. It will be Elvis Night and bingo shall be played as well.

Giants fall to Mudcats, 5-3

The game remained scoreless until the Giants scored 2 runs in the 5th off the bats of Nick Carlson and Jack Monahan. Chillicothe got one back in the top of the 6th when a fly ball dropped between 3 Giant fielders. The Giants brought the margin back to 2, when Ty Legan was able to score on a error, after having been moved into scoring position by Joe Hosey's sacrifice bunt.

The Giants' lead vanished in the 8th. The Mudcats were able to load the bases with hits by their first 3 batters Casey Gibson, Kevin Rawls, and Jeff Scardino. A base hit to left field by Mudcat first baseman Landon Hernandez tied the game, and a Giants fielding error later allow an additional run to score. The Mudcats got an insurance run in the top of the 9th when another Hernandez hit scored Kevin Rawls, who had reached base on a 2-out walk.

The Giants nearly came back in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases against Mudcats closer Phil McCormick. McCormick had difficulty finding the strike zone at first, but, unfortunately for the Giants, he regained control just in time to kill the rally.

The Giants are now 1-2 in the MINK, 3-2 overall.

Site changes

You may have noticed I've made some changes to the blog.

The biggest difference is that I've upgraded to a newer version of Blogger, that accounts for the biggest changes to the "look" of the site. This has allowed me to add a Golden Giants in the News feature on the sidebar, which will update automatically using a Google News search.

The Golden Giants on CJOnline link hasn't worked lately, so it's been replaced with a link to CJOnline's Local Sports Blog by David Streeter. I highly recommend his June 5th post which profiles former Golden Giants now playing in the minors. I am also hopeful that David's future Golden Giant posts will show up on the new Golden Giants in the News feed.

The Parkville Sluggers link has also been removed. It looks like the Sluggers continue to exist as an 18U program, but are no longer fielding a college level team.

I'm also looking into making some other changes and additions to the site, so stay tuned.

Update: OK, another addition. I've added a "MINK in the Media" service that allows you to see the same Google News feed for the other 5 members of the league. There are going to be some occassional non-baseball stories that work their way into the feeds. (For example, the Bruins feed currently features a review of the opera 'Beatrice et Benedict' which strangely enough mentions the NHL's Boston Bruins, therefore meeting the specified search critera.)

Friday Preview

The Topeka Golden Giants will host the defending MINK League champion Mudcats at Hummer Sports Park tomorrow night. First pitch is at 7 p.m.

Friday night will also be Ladies' Night, meaning that ladies will receive a free soft drink with paid admission, plus chances to win additional prizes throughout the evening.

By the way, a press release today listed the Giants' record as 3-1 overall. So it looks like last Sunday's trip to Clarinda resulted in a loss. The Giant's MINK record would be 1-1.

Giants win first game!

The Topeka Golden Giants defeated the Wichita Blackhawks, 6-3, in game one of a opening night doubleheader.

The Blackhawks took an early three run lead as Giants starter Wally Marciel struggled in the top of the first. Matt Thomason came out of the bullpen after the first third of an inning and shut down the Wichita batters, staying in the game through the 6th inning.

By the time closer Jace Hertzog entered the game in the top of the 7th, the Giants had picked up 6 runs. Leadoff hitter Ty Legan scored the Giants first run on Joe Hosey's RBI-double to centerfield in the bottom of the first. Sam Merrill scored in the third, after legging out an infield single, and again the RBI went to Hosey.

Topeka tied the game in the third when Abe Steinbach's sacrifice fly scored fellow Hornet Chris Dobler, who had recently stolen 3rd base after doubling down the right field line. The Giants took the lead in the 5th when a Dobler double scored Legan and Carlson. A Steinbach ground-out later scored Chad Griffen, bringing the Giants' total to six.
